Shortly before starting this project I had read Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. I was absolutely hooked from the moment I picked it up. When I got the opportunity to do illustrations for a conceptual redesign of this book I was ecstatic. Though often viewed as a book for young adults, Ender’s game is extremely complex and very dark. I wanted to hint at these aspect using my own style while contrasting the darkness with bright extravagant gradients.
Throughout the project I wanted to play with the combination of organic shapes and intense colors to really express an emotion within each illustration. To me the book is all about true feelings so I chose to represent this aspect with the intensity of color.
The enfaces the vastness and pure size of space plays a major role throughout. This is a reoccurring theme throughout the book so I wanted to represent this idea by making the characters seems small and obsolete compared to much of the landscape.
